The effects of pet therapy can be positive on cognitive function, mood and perceived quality of life in seniors, according to a 2011 study from the University
of Bologna in Italy. The study concluded that it is especially efficient in improving symptoms of mental illnesses, like depression or dementia, for residents in
long-term care.
