Adult Education and Torah Study

At Temple Emanu-El, we believe that Jewish learning is a life-long opportunity, obligation, and journey, and we provide many different paths and programs to pursue. From weekly Sabbath Torah Study (see below), occasional scholars-in-residence, the Rabbi’s courses on a wide variety of topics, and speakers from across many different areas of interest, we provide and encourage ongoing study as a spiritual and intellectual experience.

For both the learned and neophyte, all are welcome to explore the endless dimensions of Jewish culture, sacred texts, mysticism, current events, legend & lore, spirituality, theology, and history.  We also help our members locate and participate in other Jewish learning opportunities throughout the North Shore and Metro Boston areas. Check out our active Jewish Learning Neighborhood here.

Torah Study

“I don’t know enough for Torah Study. I can’t even read Hebrew. I don’t have time to prepare…”

That’s what a lot of us thought before we started participating in Temple Emanu-El’s Torah Study. But after a few sessions, we understood that you don’t need to know Hebrew or anything about the Torah to join – all you need is an open mind and a desire to understand Torah in light of our modern lives.

Every Saturday morning we gather to study the week’s Torah portion in an informal session. From 9:00am-10:15am, we read (in English), discuss, debate, and learn together in a warm and welcoming environment.

Most Shabbat mornings, the session is led by a lay volunteer who has prepared topics for discussion. Rabbi Meyer leads on the first Saturday of the month. Torah study is always “come as you are,” and no preparation is required (or expected). Dress comfortably, and perhaps bring a spouse or friend. We meet at the Temple in the Youth Lounge on the lower level. Please join us this week!
