B’Mitzvah
For many Jewish people, their Bar, Bat, or B'Mitzvah is one of their most important life cycle events. Here at Temple Emanu-El, we help make it a special and truly meaningful experience, tailored to the needs of each individual student.
For three years prior to B'Mitzvah age (exceptions are made for students studying at the Epstein Hillel School or similar), children study at Sparks (our Religious School). During this time, we have the opportunity to personally get to know each student, including their learning styles and personal interests.
Six months prior to B'Mitzvah age, students begin studying with a tutor to learn how to read or chant their particular Torah portion, as well as write a d'var Torah (word of Torah, or sermon) about it. Lessons focus on preparing students to read Torah, lead prayers, and teach their community.
Through the B'Mitzvah journey, our goal is to create a positive learning environment for students, cultivate pride in their Jewish identity, and inspire them to their Jewish education and maintain their connection to the Jewish community.
Dates are assigned up to three years in advance. If you are interested in learning more about the B'Mitzvah process, or about scheduling a date, please contact Rabbi Jenn Mangold.
