LETTER FROM RABBI MANGOLD
Celebrating a New Chapter!
What’s an installation service? The term is a bit misleading. I am not a refrigerator, an oven, or any other appliance needing to be installed! A rabbinic installation is a celebration of the sacred partnership between a rabbi and a congregation. It’s an opportunity to bless our growing relationship, celebrate this moment in time, and dream of our future together! A rabbinic installation is also an opportunity to reflect on what makes our community special. It’s an opportunity to express gratitude for the gifts our congregation has given us and the ways it’s transformed our lives.
Celebrating the power of community, sanctuary, and tradition, we give thanks to those who came before us and dedicated their energy and resources into our temple, helping build it into the sanctuary it is today. With gratitude in our hearts, we take this opportunity to reflect on the ways we will show up for our community. What an honor it is for each of us to have a role in building and shaping Temple Emanu-El, to plant seeds for those who will enjoy our temple’s fruits long after we are gone. One of the key ingredients in making this installation service so special is YOU! It’s YOUR presence. All of us being together, looking around the sanctuary and seeing this thriving community we are a part of, that’s one of the most inspiring parts of an installation service.
I hope you’ll attend, and I look forward to celebrating with you. Please note that children are invited and encouraged to attend; we will offer childcare during the service so that children who cannot sit through the service or need a break will still have the opportunity to attend and join us after the service for the reception.
Rabbinic installations are often officiated by clergy members, colleagues, and friends of the rabbi. I am delighted to tell you about the spectacular individuals who will be joining us at this installation service.
Rabbi Noah Chertkoff is the Senior Rabbi at Congregation Shalom in Fox Point, Wisconsin. Rabbi Noah served as my mentor and teacher when I served as Assistant Rabbi at Congregation Shalom, my first pulpit following ordination. Rabbi Noah continues to be a terrific friend, teacher, and inspiration in my life.
Rabbi Rachel Kaplan Marks is the Senior Rabbi at Temple Beth Israel in Skokie, Illinois. She served as an Associate Rabbi and Director of Congregational Learning at Congregation Shalom when I served as Assistant Rabbi. A friend, teacher, and role model to me, she remains a bright light in my life.
Rabbi David Meyer, our beloved Emeritus, will also help lead the installation blessings. One of my greatest gifts in coming to Temple EmanuEl has been my friendship with Rabbi Meyer, who has already provided me with support, generosity, wisdom, and most importantly, marathon training advice! I know it will be incredibly powerful for him to be part of this service, as he helps our community transition to this new chapter.
I hope you’ll please join our community on March 28th at 6 p.m for this joyous occasion. Thank you very much, and I look forward to celebrating with you soon!
